Pre Purchase Survey

If you are buying a boat, a pre purchase survey is an excellent investment to ensure that your hard earned cash is not buying you a boat load of trouble.

The price of the survey is frequently recouped by being able to negotiate with any defects or recommendations that have been found. In some instances the advice may be not to proceed at all.

As the name suggests, a pre purchase survey is a comprehensive survey commissioned by a potential buyer prior to purchase. The survey report is for the clients use and may be provided to finance houses for the purpose of securing a loan or for insurance companies who will insure the vessel.

Process for commissioning a Pre Purchase Survey

Typically there are two scenarios when purchasing a boat, purchasing via a broker and purchasing privately direct from the vendor.

If purchasing from a broker, the prospective buyer will normally have paid a deposit and signed a contract to purchase “subject to survey”.

If buying privately, the process may be different and we are happy to provide advice on this. It also a good idea to read the information available at the RYA website on buying boats.

To arrange the survey, contact Salient Marine Surveys and we can arrange a date for the survey, frequently at short notice. We can then have our initial free consultation so that we can establish:

  • What type of boating you wish to do

  • What sort of budget you have for the ongoing costs of running the boat

  • How much maintenance, if any, you intend to do or have others do for you
